MAJOR: Psychology

“I started out at a much larger university but it wasn’t for me. My interest is in psychology so I looked for smaller schools with strong programs in that area. I love the research lab because we are free to develop our own studies. I’m very proud that three of my research posters were accepted to a national psychology conference in Chicago. At some point, I want to go to graduate school — but I’m not ready to focus on just one area yet.”

“At Bridgewater, I was able to try a few things before finding my passion. I had just left the Navy, but I realized that it was in my dance classes where I felt most alive. One of my instructors, Dr. Jody Weber, has been a valuable mentor to me. She suggested that I apply for a summer grant in choreography, and that project became my honors thesis. That gave me confidence as I look ahead to starting my career.”

MAJOR: Fine Arts – Painting/Art Education

“When I was in high school, I wanted to be a special effects makeup artist. Once I got to Bridgewater, I became so inspired by all the art forms you can try and all the opportunities you have to be creative. I’m kind of an intense artist; I don’t like doing anything small or easy. When I’m not in the studio, I’m working as vice president of Phi Pi Delta, a co-ed fraternity. There’s so much to do here it’s hard not to be inspired.”

Fotini Shkalla

MAJOR: Biology

“I came to America from Greece to attend community college. My adviser said Bridgewater was a good school for international students. Even though this is a bigger campus, everyone was so friendly and I soon felt at home here. As a biology major, I love that I can do undergraduate research with professors who know me and understand my interests. It’s really exciting to make new discoveries that could one day help people.”

Research

Each year, more than 1,300 Bridgewater students undertake independent research projects, pursuing answers to challenging questions. By publishing their findings and presenting them on campus and across the nation, they make lasting contributions to their fields.

Athletics

Bridgewater athletes exemplify sportsmanship on and off the field and court, helping to define the values of our community with their attitude and outlook. Students participate in sports at all levels, from NCAA Division III competition to fun, casual intramural sports with their BSU peers.

Danielle Poto

AGE: 22

MAJOR: Spanish

“Choosing Bridgewater wasn’t difficult, but leaving it will be. I love it here. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, and this is a great school for training educators. I get plenty of experience working in real classrooms. I’m also captain of the BSU track team, and I specialize in distance running. It’s a great release from all the work I do, and endurance is something that all good teachers need to have.”
